XF-91 Thunderceptor

On display in the NMUSAF's Research & Development Gallery is the surviving example of Republic's XF-91 Thunderceptor. This was an early attempt at countering Soviet bombers with a fast-climbing interceptor that could supplement the thrust of its J47 turbojet with that of an XLR-11 liquid fueled rocket in the tail. The airframe owed much to Republic's F-84, but had a variable incidence wing with inverse taper.
