F-84E Thunderjet at NMUSAF

Although currently displayed as an F-84G, the NMUSAF’s Thunderjet is an F-84E, which was transferred to the facility in 1963. The E-model aimed at correcting the many shortcomings of the earlier marks of Thunderjet, with a stretched fuselage, a reinforced airframe, and provision for JATO.

The first F-84E flew on 18 May 1949, and the type was operational later that year. Some 843 E-models were built through July 1951, with a hundred of these being export aircraft.

The F-84E’s pitot tube was moved lower on the intake splitter to make way for the Sperry AN/APG-30 ranging radar
