Ryan PT Trainers
Foreseeing the need for quickly training masses of pilots in the not too distant future, the USAAC evaluated the Ryan STA as the XPT-16 in 1939, this setting the stage for procurement of 15 YPT-16 service test aircraft; the prototype and later aircraft became XPT/PT-16As when fitted with Kinner R-440 engines. These were followed by thirty PT-20 production examples that likewise became PT-20As when fitted with R-440s. The PT-21 parralled the B-5 engined ST-3 civilian prototype, while the PT-22 Recruit was based on the ST-3KR with the R-5 engine; some were rebuilt with R-540-3s as PT-22Cs. And finally there were five YPT-25s with wooden fuselages.
