B-52D tail turret

The B-52D was the last of the early “tall tailed” B-52s to remain in service, with many having been given the “Big Belly” modification to maximize their conventional bomb-carrying capability for use over Vietnam. Some were subsequently put through the Pacer Plank structural refurbishment program to keep them airworthy into the 1980s. The rather sinister-looking D-models, with their camouflage and anti-searchlight black paint, were also the last Buffs to have a manned tail turret, in this case being armed with a quartet of .50-caliber machine guns.
